It’s hard to believe that last week we were quite literally shivering in our boots in the grip of winter, and this week it’s starting to feel decidedly like spring. In the time I’ve been writing this I’ve seen three joggers go past outside, making me feel more than a little guilty… Well, it’s never too late to get fit. Regardless of what happened to your New Year’s resolution, whether it is still going strong or if it didn’t make it past the second week of January, it is now a great time of year to start shaping up for the spring and summer.
We have been delighted to take part in a Couch to 5K initiative by laying out the road markings for the Bicester town council. You can see a few photos below that show what the markings look like.
Couch to 5K is great because it recognises that not everyone starts running from the same level of fitness, but that a good level of attainment is within everyone’s grasp if you persevere and take it in stages.
We have known plenty of people who’ve gone from literally no exercise at all to regularly running 5K a couple of times a week, and the transition doesn’t take long with one of the Couch to 5K programmes. The health benefits are huge: more energy, slimmer waistline, less sleepiness during the day, and better long-term health for your heart and brain.
So if you are in the Bicester area and fancy getting more active, you now have the support of your local council and well-marked out course guides for every step of the Couch to 5K programme. Start lacing up those running shoes and I’ll see you on the track (maybe)!
Cllr Barry Wood, leader of Cherwell District Council, said: "The health routes offer residents a new place to exercise outdoors and make it easy for them to measure the distance they walk or run, encouraging them to build their fitness levels. Whether they like a gentle stroll or prefer to sprint, I would invite them to give it a go. This marked route is completely free to use and I am sure it will also bring opportunities for extra social activities as users can get together with friends or meet up with people along the way."
